Jamestown
About Jamestown, CO
Jamestown, Colorado, is not far from two urban areas — Boulder and Longmont — but has kept a sense of small-town independence that dates back more than a century. A half-hour drive northwest of downtown Boulder, Jamestown has its share of residents who commute to work, but the town has retained its cohesiveness and strong sense of community.
With uneven roads, steep canyon walls and unspoiled mountain views, Jamestown is an attraction for bikers and outdoor enthusiasts. The town was once home to 10,000 people, most of whom brought their picks and shovels to mine gold and other precious metals during the 1880s. As the gold rush died down, so did the night life, and Jamestown grew into a quiet community.
The town has only one restaurant, The Mercantile Cafe, which is more than 100 years old. The "Merc" serves as the town's entertainment center, with live music and more.
Jamestown is governed by the mayor and six members of the Board of Trustees.
Name derived from: The original settlement grew on "Jim" Creek, and early residents there called it Jimtown. It was more formally deemed "Jamestown" in 1866 by the U.S. Postal Service.
